Arsenal conceded a late equaliser as they could only manage a draw with Sheffield United at the Emirates.

It was always going to be a tough match for the Gunners. Sheffield United have showed all season just how organised and tough they are to break down. That was evident throughout the first half as they cut off Arsenal’s passing lanes and the home side struggled for most of the opening 45 minutes.

There were a couple of chances for Arteta’s side. Gabriel Martinelli had a couple of half-chances as the Gunners saw their opportunities reduced to long-range efforts. At the other end, a tireless Sheffield attack really tested this improvised defence.

The half looked to be ending goalless before Arsenal got a stroke of good fortune. Bukayo Saka had time to cross down the left flank and his ball across took a deflection and into the path of Martinelli who couldn’t miss from 5 yards out.

Arsenal started on the front foot after the break but it came to little. The final pass eluded Arsenal but Sheffield didn’t need to move the ball very much at the other end. A simple corner came into the box and a mistake from Bernd Leno afforded Oli McBurnie a headed chance. Fortunately for the Gunners, Granit Xhaka tracked back well and cleared the ball off the line.

The home side really grew into the match and looked the likeliest to grab the second goal of the game. There were numerous half-chances for the home side, including a couple of openings for the returning Eddie Nketiah who replaced Lacazette up front.

But it wasn’t to be for a Gunners attack that lacked quality. Sheffield were always going to be a threat and they eventually showed as much with 10 minutes left on the clock. A rebounded ball fell all the way for John Fleck at the back post and the former Rangers man did well to control his volleyed effort that cannoned off the surface and into the far corner of the net.

By that point, the equalising goal was a gut punch for the home side. Arsenal didn’t look likely to get back into the match with their younger attackers on the pitch as the clock ran out.
