Team News – Match Reports – Player Ratings
Match: West Ham United v Arsenal
Venue: London Stadium
Kick-Off (UK Time): 20:00 09/12/2019
—–
Here’s how we rate Freddie Ljungberg and the Arsenal players:
Freddie Ljungberg – 7
Props to Freddie Ljungberg for changing the side around. Dropping Alexandre Lacazette was a big decision that paid off for him. Ljungberg also coped well after losing both of their full-backs for this one. Arsenal just needed a win today and they got it.
Bernd Leno – 7
It was another impressive night for Bernd Leno. The German stopper made some vital saves to keep the Gunners in the match.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 6
He did well enough. Ainsley Maitland-Niles wouldn’t have expected to play tonight but he coped well after being thrown in.
Calum Chambers – 6.5
Calum Chambers put in a solid performance in the centre of Arsenal’s defence. The Englishman certainly looks a lot more comfortable in the middle than on the right flank.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 5
He had a few shaky moments. Sokratis was a little slow to get out to his man and made some errors on the ball. The former Dortmund did win more than his fair share of headers which redeemed him slightly.
Kieran Tierney – 5
He looked good at times moving forward locked in a battle with Robert Snodgrass. Unfortunately, he just wasn’t on the pitch that long. Let’s hope his injury isn’t too serious.
Sub: Sead Kolasinac (29′) – 7
It was a vital cameo from Sead Kolasinac. The Bosnian provided a crucial assist for the opening Arsenal goal and it capped an impressive night for him. He’s really come into a run of good form lately
Granit Xhaka – 3
He had a really poor night. Granit Xhaka can attract some of the blame for West Ham’s opening goal but it was his performance immediately after halftime which let him down. He was error-prone and made some truly wayward passes inside his own third which could’ve cost the Gunners this match. He was clearly carrying a knock and was rightly replaced.
Sub: Matteo Guendouzi (85′) – 6
It was a good cameo from him. Took good care of the ball and drove the side forward.
Lucas Torreira – 6
He did okay. Lucas Torreira started slowly but he grew into this one.
Mesut Ozil – 6
Mesut Ozil was woeful for much of this match but the former Germany international did grow into it. He gave the ball away a few too many times but he looked a lot better in the final 30 minutes.
Nicolas Pepe – 8
This was Nicolas Pepe’s best performance in an Arsenal shirt. In the first half, he was the Gunners’ best player despite the woeful 45 minutes. The Ivorian shone in the second half, grabbing an assist and that wonderful decisive goal. He drove forward so well with the ball and looked a real handful all night long. Great stuff.
Sub: Reiss Nelson (88′) –
Gabriel Martinelli – 7
Gabriel Martinelli wasn’t the busiest player on the pitch but he deserves a great deal of credit. The Brazilian grabbed that crucial equalising goal for the Gunners, his first in the Premier League. It would be hard not to consider the Brazilian a starting player in the league from now on.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 7.5
It was a better all-around performance from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabon international grabbed his regular goal but it was the rest of his match which improved. He linked up well with Nicolas Pepe in the second half.
