Arsenal’s misery began before this match even started. Hector Bellerin was due to start but he pulled up in the warm-up and was replaced by Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
The first half progressed in very much the same way as most of Arsenal’s recent matches have. The Gunners saw a lot of the ball but looked very unlikely to create much in the way of goalscoring chances with that possession.
Mesut Ozil had the best opportunity for the visitors in that first half. He was on the end of a cross but his header went well over the bar.
It just felt like a matter of time until the Gunners let the opposition in and that proved accurate. A simple corner wasn’t cleared by the visitors on multiple occasions. Angelo Ogbonna took advantage of the indecision to power home a header via a deflection from Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Gunners fans wanting an immediate change after the break would be disappointed. The first 15 minutes were absolutely awful as far as Arsenal were concerned with a limp, aimless display littered with errors.
But that soon changed. With an hour on the clock, substitute Sead Kolasinac burst clear down the left flank and cut the ball back for Gabriel Martinelli. The young Brazilian was unmarked and expertly slid the ball into the back of the net for his first Premier League goal.
1-1 and the Gunners were back in it. There was suddenly a different match on and when Pepe found the ball on the right flank and cut inside, there was only one outcome. The Ivorian’s curling shot powered into the far corner to put the visitors in front.
The Gunners were playing like a new side, one flowing with confidence. Pepe found the ball on the right flank yet again and played a chipped cross for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who volleyed the chance home to make it 3-1.
After that, it was all about keeping the ball. Matteo Guendouzi entered the fray and did just that as Arsenal saw out the match to secure a vital win for the club and interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg.
