Stephan Lichtsteiner has revealed where he thinks Unai Emery went wrong at Arsenal as head coach (via The i).
Much like the head coach Unai Emery, there was optimism from Arsenal fans over the signing of Stephan Lichtsteiner in the summer of 2018.
And like the coach that played him, things soured for the defender despite a decent start to life in North London.
Now at the German side Augsburg, the Swiss defender has revealed where he thinks Emery went wrong at Arsenal.
“Over a long time it was really good, then the last two months [of the season] I didn’t really understand what had happened,” he said in an interview.
“Training was good, the team that we had last year was an amazing team, so it’s not my thing to speak bad about the coach because it is too easy now that they are struggling to say something against him.
“I’d say [he is] a good trainer, a good coach, but maybe he struggled with the top players.
“With the big players, he hasn’t maybe the relationship to bring more out [of them] and get the top performances. Maybe that point I can say [something] negative, but the rest was almost everything positive.”
So, it seems as if Stephan Lichtsteiner thinks Emery’s big problem was in dealing with the big players at Arsenal. It was a similar story for the Spaniard at his previous club, Paris Saint-Germain.
