Highly reliable journalist David Ornstein has confirmed that Manchester United are indeed interested in Red Bull Salzburg striker Erling Braut Haaland.
Reports have suggested that Man United are leading the race to sign the striker, whose performances have turned a number of heads this term.
Haaland is top scorer in the Champions League with seven goals and has a remarkable total of 26 goals in 19 games across all competitions this term.
In a column for The Athletic on Monday, Ornstein confirmed that United’s interest in Haaland was real, but that Mario Mandzukic was less likely to join the club given his complete lack of playing time since May.
Once again, Ornstein seems to be right on the money here.
Despite reports strongly suggesting that Mandzukic was a sure thing, it makes sense that United are now thinking about the bigger picture in Haaland, who is very unlikely to be available in January but would, in the long term, fill the hole left by Romelu Lukaku.
This means that United will have to make do with the goals of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial until May, and while the pair are impressing at the moment, it would take just one injury to leave the club’s attacking prospects in a perilous position.
Then again, if United are serious about Haaland – valued at £85m – then this is a sacrifice that they have to make.
