Saint-Etienne manager Claude Puel has admitted that it is “hard to accept” that the Ligue 1 side is selling “our best player” William Saliba to Arsenal (via Sport Witness).
Amid the controversy and loss of form at Arsenal right now, it’s easy to forget that the Gunners have already agreed on a new signing for next summer.
William Saliba completed his transfer to the Emirates this summer but returned to Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne on loan for the year.
The 18-year-old has put in a string of fine performances for the French side of late and now, his current manager has voiced some regret over the transfer.
“It’s hard to accept that we sell our best player, a young kid, to help fill the coffers,” Claude Puel said of Saliba in an interview with l’Equipe.
“When you have to sell your gems to round up the budget and then do short term deals to fill in the gaps, you’re being reactionary.
“Rather than buying a ready-made player, I’d rather we buy him to develop him and help him grow.
“Work was done in the short-term. Is this model viable? I don’t think it can make the club a success.”
It’s an interesting series of quotes from Claude Puel. The experienced French manager has called an 18-year-old “our best player” and is clearly frustrated that he will leave the club next summer. This will be music to the ears of Arsenal fans who may have secured a vital signing for the long-term future of the club.
