The disappointment of Wednesday night was quickly banished with Frank Lampard going as far to say his priorities lie elsewhere.
Tomorrow’s opponents Watford also suffered League Cup heartache with defeat at the hands of fellow league strugglers Everton and continue to look void of ideas as they search for their first victory of the season.
Injury woes plague Chelsea’s preparation for the match with Lampard confirming that Blues quartet Antonio Rudiger, N’Golo Kante, Andreas Christensen and Ross Barkley all ruled out of the side’s trip to Vicarage Road.
The form book would have you thinking that a Chelsea win is inevitable, having won every away game since their opening weekend debacle at Old Trafford, but ultimately Watford are a team capable of pulling off a performance against top-six opposition, smashing four past the Blues in last season’s instalment of this fixture.
Winless in ten Premier League games and having already pulled the trigger in the dugout this season, Watford’s campaign has a dauntingly pre-eminent feel to it and relegation is very much on the cards for a team celebrated for much of last season.
Dogged industry and bite in the midfield was flanked by continental flair and trickery out wide. Watford have now paid the price for a summer of indecision and a lack of direction following their humbling defeat in the FA Cup final.
Packed to the rafters and galvanized by weeks of frustration and humiliation, tomorrow’s game could prove somewhat of a poisoned chalice for Chelsea. It is of paramount importance that the Blues dominates the ball in central areas drawing Watford infield before quickly distributing into wide areas. Tammy Abraham made good use of this tactic against Burnley dropping deep to collect the ball centrally before driving and spraying possession out to Willian who was able to catch the Burnley defence out of position and in two minds as to who to mark.
Our last preview earmarked the need for a tiring Chelsea side to guard against complacency, those warnings were not heeded and under more testing conditions there must once more be a concerted effort to press high and overwhelm the opposition in forward areas – the return of Abraham and Mason Mount will surely help this.
