Edwin van der Sar has ruled himself out of becoming Manchester United’s director of football by signing a new deal at Ajax.
The Dutchman, who won four Premier League titles and the Champions League over six years at Old Trafford, had been touted by many as the ideal candidate to fill the empty and much-needed director of football role.
Van der Sar has proven himself in such a role since taking over as CEO at Ajax in 2016, with the Amsterdam club encountering impressive success since the former keeper stepped into the role.
However, United fans will be sad – although not surprised – to see that Van der Sar has signed a new deal with Ajax until 2023.
Very happy with my contract extension at this beautiful club! I started as a goalie in 1991, 3 years ago I became @AFCAjax CEO. We’ve had some difficult moments, but the good times are definitely back. And of course we want more in the future!

I mean, why leave a club whose infrastructure is blossoming? Why leave a club that has, since 2016, gone from strength to strength? Why abandon a solid plan – engendered by yourself – in exchange for, well, no plan at all?
This is all to say that Van der Sar leaving would have signalled a career move that would not make sense, even if it is the one that United supporters want.
A more viable candidate for the role would be Ralf Rangnick, who has achieved success at RB Leipzig.
