Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis has admitted he won’t be able to hold onto long-term Manchester United target Kalidou Koulibaly forever.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has more or less made his side more solid than in the past but even he may be tempted to sign the talented Senegalese man.
However, there isn’t an immediate need for it in comparison to the past given Harry Maguire’s signing last summer.
Victor Lindelof has been tied down to a new contract and Axel Tuanzebe is considered the future so one can even argue there’s no room for Koulibaly.
However, when a player of that calibre becomes available it’s difficult to not be interested as Sir Alex Ferguson proved with the Robin van Persie signing.
According to the Mirror, De Laurentiis said: “I loved Koulibaly the man so I refused €105m, but a time will come when I’ll have to sell him. Whoever says we didn’t improve our defence is wrong.”
The problem is when will the time come because if it’s when Koulibaly is past his peak then it would make no sense for Manchester United to invest in him.
Current Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has previously threatened to leave the club should the dominating centre-back be sold so it’s interesting that it’s even up for discussion.
Either way, United’s current needs are further upfield with the need for investing in an attacker and a midfielder woefully obvious to even the most basic of fans.
