Chelsea were up against it from the get go in Amsterdam, but Michy Batshuayi’s endeavours secured the Blues a mighty three points that will be etched in the history books.
It was a difficult start for the youngsters, with Ajax looking more prolific infront of goal. This however, was prevented by a solid performance from Kepa. Fikayo Tomori struggled to find any sort of rhythm, yet turned a shaky start into successful clean sheet.
Chelsea showed signs of promise towards the latter stages of the first half, attacking Andre Onana’s goal in force, but failing to make any chances count. Ajax had a goal disallowed by VAR as Quincy Promes was fractionally offside following Hakim Ziyech’s cross that hit Tomori and found it’s way to the Dutchman.
The arrival of Christian Pulisic had an instant affect, as Chelsea looked likely to find the net. On came Batshuayi in place of Tammy Abraham who had struggled to get into a shooting position all evening. The Belgian hammered a shot over the bar which looked to haunt Chelsea towards the end of the match.
Despite the efforts of Ajax’s defence, Batshuayi found a break through as he rifled a shot against the crossbar which found its way in, and Chelsea had secured three vital points that will play a huge part in the remainder of their Champions League campaign.
Captain Cesar Azpilicueta was a stand out in tonight’s game, as the veteran was flawless in defence and his recoveries were exceptional. A very hard fought victory for the West London youngsters.
Chelsea have now won six games in a row, and have also extended their unbeaten away run in European football to nine games.
