Christian Eriksen turned down the chance to join Manchester United this summer because his heart is set on joining Real Madrid, according to reports.
The midfielder, who is entering the final year of his contract, has been tipped for a move away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer after failing to agree fresh terms with the club.
Reports earlier this month suggested that United could strike a deal for the midfielder if they made an offer of around £50m, but nothing ever materialised.
According to the Manchester Evening News‘ Samuel Luckhurst, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer personally spoke with Eriksen about a potential move to Old Trafford, only for the 27-year-old to confirm that his preference was a move to La Liga.
Solskjaer has made a point over the summer of only signing players who were fully committed to the Norwegian’s project at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes, Paulo Dybala and Eriksen would have all been exciting additions, but not a single one of them truly, in their heart of hearts, wanted to become United players. Moving for them would have been a mistake.
This mindset has maybe deprived United of at least one signing. What it has done, though, is refocus the club around a specific way forward. And that, to be honest, signals progress.
