Luke Shaw has laid down the gauntlet to his fellow Manchester United teammates by describing last season as ’embarrassing’.
The 23-year-old was the club’s most consistent performer last season, making 40 appearances in all competitions, and won the ‘Player of the Season’ award as a result.
However, even Shaw’s level dipped well below average as United endured a torrid end to the 2018-19 season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finishing in sixth place.
Speaking to the Telegraph‘s James Ducker, Shaw opined that nobody in the squad deserved to be named ‘Player of the Season’.
Luke Shaw: “I didn't really feel like anyone deserved the player-of-the-year award because of the season we had as a team. There is more to come from me and everyone needs to be better because last season was somewhere near embarrassing." #mulive [sky via @TelegraphDucker]

He’s absolutely right, of course. Nobody, not even the masterful David de Gea, was able to perform to a consistently high level over nine months last season.
That, really, is what truly matters to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: total and unwavering application, 24/7. He did not get that last season and it cost the club Champions League football, despite being in a brilliant position to do so.
Shaw and his teammates will know that maintaining the right level of performance is, above all, a consequence of possessing the correct mentality. It remains to be seen whether all these players have the right mindset needed to take the team to the next level.
