Chelsea suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup, but produced a much stronger performance than their opening Premier League loss to Manchester United.
Top-scorer from last season’s run to the Europa League final Olivier Giroud opened the scoring for the Blues, after Christian Pulisic’s fine through ball allowed him to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Sadio Mane levelled the score three minutes into the second-half, before an incredible double stop from Kepa Arrizabalaga denied both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk from close range to force the tie into extra-time.
Mane fired Liverpool ahead five minutes into the additional 30 to put Jurgen Klopp’s side in the ascendancy for all of six minutes, before Jorginho converted from the penalty spot to put Chelsea level, after Adrian had fouled Tammy Abraham in the area.
The Liverpool ‘keeper had the last laugh, however, saving Abraham’s penalty in the shootout to give the Reds a 5-4 victory on penalties.
Here are the winners and losers from Chelsea’s Super Cup exploits.
