Rio Ferdinand believes that Paulo Dybala’s failed move to Manchester United will benefit Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the long-run, arguing that the Argentine did not have the “minerals” to play under the Norwegian.
Man United and Juventus had agreed on a deal in principle for the transfer of Dybala to Old Trafford, with Romelu Lukaku heading in the other direction.
However, the transfer broke down after United failed due to image rights and a failure to reach a consensus over Dybala’s wages.
Speaking earlier this week, Ferdinand insisted that United were right to pull out of signing a player who did not really want to join.
“A lot of players have declined coming to Man Utd in recent years. They’ve chosen somewhere else,” he said.
“But I don’t know how Dybala had the audacity to turn them down when he’s on the bench at Juventus. He needs to start playing some football.
“Maybe he’s thinking: ‘I want to be Champions League or I’ll sit on the bench. I’d rather do that than play at Man Utd.’
“Well, I’m happy he didn’t come, then because you haven’t got the right minerals that I want in a Manchester United player!”
Solskjaer made it clear earlier this year that he would only sign players who were fully committed to the project unfolding at Old Trafford.
You could see that spirit against Chelsea: 11 red shirts streaming forward with discipline and fearlessness, refusing to relent in energy levels, devoid of any compunction.
Dybala may have looked good in that starting XI but, before anything else, he quite simply did not want to be there – and that is the most important thing.
