A second-half goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was enough for Arsenal to get the win on opening day against Newcastle United.

Team News – Player Ratings – Match Highlights
Match: Newcastle United v Arsenal
Stadium: St. James’ Park, Newcastle
Kick-Off (UK Time): 14:00 11/08/2019
—–

It was a tight start to the match, Arsenal’s first of the new Premier League season. There was little to show for either side in the opening 15 minutes but Newcastle started to creep into the match. Jonjo Shelvey came close when his deflected shot hit the side netting of Arsenal’s goal.

The visitors soon quietened the crowd. The Gunners started to see a bit more of the ball but struggled to create any real openings. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a decent shot saved before Henrikh Mkhitaryan skied the best chance of the match.

The first half ended with little in the way of chances for either side. Arsenal needed to make some changes at the break but none of their substitutes ended the field. It didn’t matter.

After 55 minutes, Arsenal finally took the lead. Ainsley Maitland-Niles did brilliantly down the right flank, stealing the ball and driving forward. Aubameyang was left unmarked in the box and when the ball came to him, the Gabonese forward controlled it and finished with ease.

Arsenal just needed to control the match after the goal and they did just that. New signings Nicolas Pepe, Dani Ceballos, and Gabriel Martinelli all entered the pitch after the break to re-energise the side. That was enough as Arsenal saw the match out to secure all three points.

Here’s how we rate the Arsenal players:

Bernd Leno – 7

A good performance. Bernd Leno was commanding between the sticks and produced some good saves.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 8

It was an impressive performance from Ainsley Maitland-Niles. The Englishman did well at the back down that right flank but was better moving forward. His assist for the opening goal was an excellent one, showcasing his speed, ability, and decision-making.

Calum Chambers – 7

He did well enough. Calum Chambers didn’t have the toughest afternoon on the whole but coped well enough with the Newcastle attack.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 7

He was fine. Sokratis defended well and took good care of the ball.

Nacho Monreal – 6.5

Nacho Monreal defended well but hardly carried a threat moving forward. He was a little slow at times with some poor decision-making.

Granit Xhaka – 6

He didn’t have his best match in an Arsenal shirt. Granit Xhaka was a little sloppy in possession early on but improved as the match went on.

Matteo Guendouzi – 7

He can be pleased with his afternoon. Matteo Guendouzi drove the team forward for spells in the first half and did well enough after the break. He tired as the match went on but that’s natural for the opening day of the season.

Joe Willock – 7

Joe Willock did well in the Arsenal midfield. He worked hard and drove the side forward both with his passing and the ball at his feet. A solid 65 minutes from the youngster.

Sub: Dani Ceballos (64′) – 6

Dani Ceballos did well on his Gunners debut. The Spaniard was so careful in possession and oozed quality.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan –  5

It wasn’t his best day. Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a woeful first half, constantly gifting possession to the opposition and failing to find his final pass. He improved after the break but by then, most of the damage had been done.

Sub: Gabriel Martinelli (83′) – 5

Had one wayward defensive header which could have made things difficult for his team.

Reiss Nelson – 6

He was quiet. Reiss Nelson didn’t have enough of the ball to make an impact on the match. The Englishman had some moments in the match but will be a little disappointed.

Sub: Nicolas Pepe (71′) – 6

Looked sharp enough. Nicolas Pepe looks ready to make his full Arsenal debut next weekend.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 7

He made the difference for the Gunners. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looked sharp throughout but didn’t see enough of the ball in the first half.
