Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that Mason Greenwood will receive further opportunities to impress at number nine for Manchester United next season.
The 17-year-old has become a regular in first-team training at Carrington amid a spell of devastating form playing for the Under-23s.
Greenwood was handed his senior debut during the famous win over Paris Saint-Germain in March, and impressed on his first ever start on the final day of the season against Cardiff City.
Speaking at a press conference in Perth, Solskjaer made it clear that the youngster would receive further opportunities next term.
“You saw Mason in the last training session,” he said. “Bang, bang, bang. Three goals.”
“He could have had five goals against Cardiff but didn’t score. If a striker gets into a good vein of form, he will score goals.
“Mason will definitely play more games. He has grown over the summer and I think his confidence has grown too after the Cardiff game, as he was our best player.”
United fans can despair about the inevitability of certain below-par, past-their-best players staying at this club; they can also hope for the dizzying potential of the club’s academy becoming a driving force under Solskjaer. His capture of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka indicates he wants to move in that direction – to stem the ocean of mediocrity with the vitality of youth.
Greenwood must be part of this. He is simply too good for the Reserves and, as seen against Cardiff, brings a kind of thrust which others cannot – or will not – replicate. It could be the perfect season for him to rise to prominence.
