Manchester United have continued their staff overhaul by making key backroom changes as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer overlooks the start to his first full season in charge of the club.
The former striker has already brought in some members of staff he’s familiar with or trusts and now more changes have been made, although this time it may have been out of his hands.
According to the club’s official website, Nicky Butt has been promoted to a new position called the Head of First Team Development that will see him report directly to Solskjaer.
The former midfielder will now work with the legendary Norwegian and his staff along with making key decisions on the club’s academy as well as being a part of the Technical Board. Nick Cox has taken over Butt’s former role of Head of Academy.
The backroom shuffle will rightfully raise questions as it sounds almost as though there will now be no director of football appointed.
Reports have continuously arisen in the past claiming executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is searching for someone to bridge the gap between the board and manager.
However, later reports claimed the hiring would be done within and finally it was said a director of football wouldn’t be appointed with a technical director now the role they’re searching for instead. The new role sounds awfully like what Nicky has just been handed.
