Herrera makes revealing statement about Man United board after joining PSG

Ander Herrera has spoken of how ‘disagreements’ over Manchester United’s future ‘project’ and his role within it prompted the Spaniard to leave the club for Paris Saint-Germain.

The midfielder, who joined Man United in 2014, officially completed a move PSG last week after his contract at Old Trafford expired at the end of June.

Herrera’s representatives failed to strike an agreement with Man United in contract talks, with the latter refusing to countenance a wage of £250,000-a-week.

Speaking in his first in-depth interview since joining PSG, Herrera hinted towards certain fundamental differences over how the two parties saw his future as well as the wider project at Old Trafford.

Herrera: “I don’t like looking at the past but there were differences regarding the project and my importance within it. I was very happy, I have a lot to thank the club for, the fans and also Solskjaer.” #mufc [Marca, @Sport_Witness]

Herrera deeply cared about United, and still does. At the same time, though, the midfielder – now 29, the age when players normally receive their last big contract – had to consider the optimal option for the last few golden years of his career.

You cannot blame him for thinking that United did not serve as that option. There is scant semblance of a ‘project’ at United. If there is one, it is miles behind that of the very best in Europe.

United’s inability to keep Herrera stems from the same reason why, over the next year, Paul Pogba and David de Gea are likely to depart, too. The club in its current state cannot, it seems, successfully keep hold of its best players at a time when many clubs are developing a lot faster.
