Opinion: Why Chelsea must move for Coutinho if court appeal is successful

Philippe Coutinho has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge and he could well be the best player to step up as Eden Hazard’s replacement.

The Chelsea transfer situation is still unclear at the moment following the ban that the club has received. The Blues have now lodged a second appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and are hoping for it to be successful, otherwise, they would not be able to make any signings for two transfer windows.

However, if it does go through successfully, the ban could be held back a year and that would allow the club so sign freely. This would be great news for the club, seeing as Hazard is nearing a move away from Stamford Bridge and someone will have to fill the huge hole left behind.

Hazard is the best attacking outlet of this Chelsea side and it is going to be a real loss once he leaves for Los Blancos in a reported £115million move. He brings such presence going forward on and off the ball, providing extremely intelligent movement and skill. There are very few players in the world at the moment who can class themselves in the same class as the Belgian.

However, there is no doubt that Coutinho has the capability to return to the Premier League, this time to Stamford Bridge, and be a star once again. He is a fantastic playmaker just like Hazard, with most of his play consisting of his overall knowledge of the game.

There are few defenders in the world who can keep up with his talent and stop him from making an impact in a match. In his time at Liverpool, he had a few unbelievable matches in what is dubbed the best league in the world and proved to football fans from all over that he was one of the best.

This then granted him the opportunity to sign for Barcelona in a fee worth up to £142million. For him to transfer to the Catalan side for such an expensive price – it only proved his unreal talent. However, his time at Barcelona has not been anywhere near as successful, only scoring five goals in 34 league games this season. This poor form in Spain has certainly brought his transfer fee down and it is now reported at £89million.

Even though he has been in poor form as of late since his move to Barcelona, this does not mean he does not have the talent to come back from this. He is a player who could offer a massive amount of skill to the Chelsea attack, which they will need with the loss of Hazard.

A season back in the Premier League for Coutinho could really give his career that boost that is needed to be classed as one of the better players in the world again. Chelsea need to act fast though, with European heavyweights PSG as well as league rivals Manchester United also interested.
