Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must remain strong and make a statement this summer transfer window in order to ensure future success.
The Norwegian can’t be tempted to make signings out of desperation that would damage their ability to conduct business in upcoming seasons.
Solskjaer has spoken about the need to invest smartly, particularly citing his desire to sign young, talented, British players who would improve the first-team.
Although this fits perfectly in United’s philosophy and history, they cannot turn themselves into victims of their own decisions.
Matthijs de Ligt and Aaron Wan-Bissaka represent the exact kind of players that technically fit the type of signings Ole should be making.
However, they will also prove to be crucial in making the kind of statement the Red Devils need to make in order to ensure the club isn’t taken advantage of.
De Ligt and Wan-Bissaka, either individually or their sides, have proven to be too expensive for interested parties and so Solskjaer has to avoid falling prey as his predecessors did.
If neither player is affordable or represents good value for money, then Manchester United should stick to their guns and avoid signing them.
There’s always a good deal around if Ole and his staff are able to find it but there has been criticism over the club’s recruiting department.
Reports have emerged over interest in PSG’s Thomas Meunier and Stuttgart’s Ozan Kabak, both of whom would be better and easier deals to conclude.
The Belgian is said to be worth £22m and the Turk has a release clause of £13.2m meaning Manchester United could wrap up two quality deals for around £30m out of the reported £200m budget they have.
However, if they pay over the odds for Matthijs or Aaron then they must prepare themselves to be taken advantage of for many future transfer windows with their being no end to the cycle.
