Mesut Ozil has shed some light on why he missed Sunday’s Premier League match with Burnley (via Football.London).
It wasn’t a surprise to see Mesut Ozil’s name omitted from the starting lineup against Burnley on Sunday.
The German hasn’t exactly been a key player for the Gunners this season and has missed more than his fair share of matches, particularly away from home.
Now, the 30-year-old has given his side of proceedings and responded to rumours that he could be heading for a summer exit.
“If the coach speaks to me and tells me I won’t play in a game it’s something I need to accept and just get on with it,” Ozil told DAZN DACH.
“I’ve carried on working on making myself as fit and healthy as I could and it’s worked out for me.
“Now I’m playing, but of course it’s the coach’s decision if I play or not. I’ve had some injuries this season and I’ve had to miss some games. But I know when I’m fit I’ll play matches.”
Ozil has long linked with an exit from the Emirates since Unai Emery’s appointment in North London and the German spoke about those reports.
“I don’t think there’s a chance of that to be honest,” he said of a potential move.
“I’ve got two more years here and what happens afterwards is not in my hands. We’ll see then, but I’m proud to be at this club and really happy at this club.”
It’s such a difficult situation for Arsenal that still hasn’t got the conclusion it needs. Mesut Ozil is obviously an enormously talented player on his best days but just isn’t performing to that level on a regular enough basis to justify his place in the squad. The German is also the highest-paid player at the club and will be until his contract expires in two seasons, something which is looking like a worse decision with each passing week.
