Manchester United may have to consider alternatives to Benfica star Ruben Dias after this latest development.
The Portuguese was believed to be amongst Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top targets but a transfer was always going to be difficult due to his side’s reluctance to negotiate.
However, after the latest news surfaced, it seems near impossible to sign the centre-back, dealing the Norwegian a significant blow.
Solskjaer is said to have already attempted to sign Harry Maguire, Kalidou Koulibaly and Declan Rice to no effect so far.
Now Dias may have to be chucked in with the rest and the United legend will have to turn his attentions elsewhere.
According to the Mirror, A Bola report that Benfica are currently negotiating with Ruben to not only extend his contract but to also increase his release clause from €60m to €100m.
The Red Devils have it within their budget to sign the youngster but given how many other transfers they still want to make, they can’t afford to spend such a large sum on just one player.
Had Ole’s squad been complete and he only needed to invest in one or two stars, a move for Dias would’ve been more plausible.
Unfortunately Manchester United are in the midst of a squad overhaul and will now have to look at other, potentially worse, alternatives.
