Manchester United legend Patrice Evra has condemned his former side’s lack of spirit and leadership after they failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer unfortunately couldn’t inspire his troops to a top four finish despite the bright start to his era.
United have been in free fall ever since the Norwegian was appointed on a long term basis with their season ending in an embarrassing 2-0 defeat to already relegated Cardiff City.
Evra, who was a part of multiple championship winning sides, believes his former side’s inability to perform at the highest level since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement is down to two reasons.
The Frenchman has hardly said a word about the Red Devils since departing but let loose in devastating fashion as his discussed many of the club’s ongoing matters.
According to Sky Sports, Patrice said: “I will say it is the spirit and the passion for the club [that United are lacking]. I know I am talking ‘old school’.
“I don’t want to blame the players because I think that some players are here and they themselves don’t even know why they are here.
“They don’t have leadership in the dressing room to show them what it means to play for Manchester United.
“In our time, I remember I played nine years for United and for seven years I don’t think I lost two games in a row.”
Manchester United struggles are hard to pin down to just one issue but there is the feeling that some of the poor form was down to the squad’s fitness.
At the start of Solskjaer’s reign, his side blew teams aside with ease but after a while his intense, high tempo tactics backfired heavily.
United’s stars were clearly not fit enough to keep it up for long and so their average quality eventually started to show once more.
Hopefully Ole can get the squad fit during pre-season and they can recover to show that it was in fact all a blip.
