Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken out about Ander Herrera‘s increasingly difficult situation at Manchester United.
The Spaniard looks set to join Paris Saint Germain on a free transfer in the summer after Man United failed to strike an agreement over a new deal.
Herrera, according to reports, was open to staying at Old Trafford, but the club’s silence regarding contract talks between January and March – during which he was allowed to speak with other clubs – has pushed the midfielder towards Paris.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Solskjaer suggested Herrera was worrying over his future and confirmed he would be unavailable for Saturday’s meeting with West Ham United.
Solskjaer on Herrera: "Maybe the future might've been worrying him & maybe that's part of the reason that he's injured. Who knows? He doesn't know because he got a different injury in training. The money, though, does not feel like the decisive factor. United have managed this Herrera contract situation poorly – very much in keeping with a wider sense of incompetence which has bloated the club’s wage structure, giving United less clout in negotiations, and handed second rate players like Phil Jones and Ashley Young with new contracts.
In another world, United could have tied down Herrera early, done away with players who are no longer good enough, and begun planning the team for next season.
As things are, the club – still without a director of football – simply stalled on decision-making, allowing for PSG to swoop in.
