England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed Marcus Rashford was carrying an injury from the moment he linked up with the national team for international duty.
Rashford did not appear for training with the England squad on Thursday morning and Southgate confirmed later on that the 21-year-old had returned to Manchester United due to an injury.
However, it appears this affliction was not picked up during training with England, with Southgate noting medical staff had been monitoring him throughout the week.
Southgate: “He's (Rashford) been with the medical team all week. It's clear to us he's not ready for our matches, so we have sent him back to his club. He is out of the two games.” #mufc [MU]

It should come as no surprise that Rashford is suffering from an injury. At this point in the season, most players are carrying some kind of knock.
But Rashford desperately needs some time off. The youngster has started 14 of the 19 games played under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He played most of the 0-0 draw with Liverpool last month carrying an injury, and has featured in every game since. Injuries to Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez have left Solskjaer but with no choice but to play Rashford.
Against Arsenal and Wolves, the usual zip and thrust of Rashford’s game felt blunted. He was very clearly tired. The club must give him time to rest and recover properly ahead of the closing two months of this season.
