In an interview with French news outlet RTL, Olivier Giroud expressed his frustration about his current situation at Chelsea.
With the introduction of striker Gonzalo Higuain, Giroud has seen less game time than usual and it seems to be taking a toll on the 32-year-old.
After bagging a perfect hat-trick against Dynamo Kyiv in the Europa League, the frontman was dropped by Maurizio Sarri in their Premier League defeat against Everton.
The frustration is understandable, with 15 of Giroud’s 21 Premier League appearances coming from the bench and with just one goal to his name.
The striker voiced his frustrations saying:
Of course it’s frustrating, I know that I will only play in Europa League. But I will try to be as effective and decisive as possible.
Effective he certainly is. The former Puskas award-winner is a different machine in the Europa League, scoring nine goals in his nine appearances.
But with his contract up for renewal at the end of this season, it looks like Giroud will be looking elsewhere for playing time.
The summer will be lively. I am not scared of going down a level for more playing time.
The ex-Montpellier forward also hinted at a possible return to his homeland France, suggesting ‘it could be where he ends his career.’
Giroud’s lack of game time, mixed with Higuain’s failure to deliver on a promise to rock the Premier League, pressure seems to be mounting on Sarri and his football philosophy.
