Ole Gunnar Solskjaer compared Scott McTominay’s performance during Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool to that of Darren Fletcher.
The young Scot, hardly a favourite among supporters, was drafted into the starting XI after Nemanja Matic pulled out with an injury which looks set to keep the Serbian out for a few weeks.
And he produced a performance hallmarked by pure spirit and determination, giving everything he could to thwart Liverpool’s momentum going forward.
Solskjaer made a point of comparing McTominay’s performance to fellow Scot Fletcher, who made himself known for indomitable displays in games.
Ole: “I learned a lot about the players today, Scott McTominay was a ‘Darren Fletcher’ for us, absolutely fantastic.” #mufc [Eurosport] pic.twitter.com/yIvqeWSJzq

McTominay is a limited footballer – and probably not Man United standard – but his heart, his sheer determination, was something to be admired, and it resonated with supporters.
This was not a game neither McTominay nor Andreas Pereira were meant to play, and both players went about their business as if it were their duty to show something extra to a raucous Old Trafford crowd, whenever they could.
Piece by piece, their snapping feet and inexhaustible lungs ground Liverpool’s midfield charge to a halt. They did their jobs.
And with both Ander Herrera and Matic injured, they may well get further chances to impress over the next few weeks.
