Player ratings: United outdone by PSG, Pogba sent off

David de Gea 5 – Should have come out and punched away Paris Saint Germain’s opener, but could not do much about the second. He may be the best shot-stopper in the world but his authority at corners can improve.

Ashley Young 5 – Produced an impressive first half, absolutely smashing Angel Di Maria into the advertising boards, but looked lost after half time, allowing the Argentine far too much space for Kylian Mbappe’s goal. Delivery from out wide was awful.

Eric Bailly 5 – Looked relatively calm and composed until 50 minutes, when PSG suddenly switched up a gear. Got nowhere near Mbappe for PSG’s second.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Passed the ball nicely and displayed good aggression in the box but, like the rest of his teammates, looked powerless as PSG killed the tie in seven minutes.

Luke Shaw 6 – Had a quietly decent game, staying tight to Dani Alves and usually finding the right man with his passes.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Made a costly defensive error for Presnel Kimpembe’s goal but was the most composed of all Manchester United players, especially in the first half.

Ander Herrera 6 – Pressed extremely hard until 30 minutes, when for some reason Man United dropped off and lost their way. The Spaniard’s influence disappeared accordingly.

Paul Pogba 5 – Very frustrating game for Pogba. This was supposed to be his big moment, freed from the shackles of Mourinho and let loose on top quality opposition, but the Frenchman gave a frustrated performance as Marquinhos – a defender turned midfielder – man-marked him all game quite successfully, until his fuse blew on 90 minutes and he picked up a red card.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Provided some important energy bursting down the middle with the ball and was among United’s best players until suffering a worrying muscle injury on the stroke of half time.

Anthony Martial 5 – For whatever reason, the ball did not get to the Frenchman enough. And when it did he was unable to have an impact. Came off injured along with Lingard at half time.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Did not get firing, although it was not always his fault. Wasteful in possession at times but the ball did not get to him fast enough.

Substitutes

Alexis Sanchez 4 – Tasked with replacing the influence of Martial and got nowhere near. No momentum, no zip, no real presence.

Juan Mata 5 – Looked to progress the play after half time but just could not find himself in the right areas.

Romelu Lukaku N/A
