Mike Phelan reveals how Solskjaer and Sir Alex are similar

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan believes the club’s new look backroom staff have a good balance about them.

Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer make up the four believed to be the most responsible for the club’s recent upturn in form.

After Jose Mourinho was sacked, the Norwegian and Phelan were brought into the club with no real expectations placed on their shoulders.

Solskjaer opted to retain the services of Carrick and McKenna as first-team coaches and his decision has seemingly paid off.

The four have led United to an unbeaten run of eight wins in nine games that has seen them close the gap to the top four spots remarkably.

According to The Daily Star, Mike said: “It is working. The balance is good, the feedback is good, we get on.

“It’s a nice, split age range, so we’ve all got different ideas, we communicate a lot and it is quite refreshing.

“Ole sits there at the top of the tree, and I hover in between making sure everything happens the way I feel the way Manchester United should work.

“It takes me back a little bit into the processes we had before [under Sir Alex], which was a little bit of youth, a bit of experience, a little bit of knowledge.

“There’s an extra dynamic in there, that is all part of a football club.”

Michael is the most recent member of the Red Devils’ squad having just retired fairly recently while Kieran was promoted to the first team under Mourinho’s management.

Phelan has had plenty of experience in general but in particular he was a huge part of the success the club enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson as well.

Some supporters feel that if Solskjaer was to be handed the job permanently then he should also retain the backroom staff, in particular Mike.
