Herrera responds to fans calling for him to captain Man United

Manchester United star Ander Herrera has insisted he’s not going crazy over the thought of captaining the club on a permanent basis after fans called for him to be given the armband.

Antonio Valencia is the official club captain but the honour has been bestowed upon many players this season such as David de Gea, Paul Pogba, Chris Smalling and Ashley Young.

The Ecuadorian has struggled with fitness and form this season which has seen the aforementioned names being temporary captains.

Some supporters however, believe the Spaniard should be given the armband due to his passion for the club and his sacrifice.

Herrera himself though feels that United shouldn’t have one leader and instead should have multiple ones to make them a strong team.

According to Manchester Evening News, Ander said: “I have been told a lot of times ‘you should wear the armband in the future’ but I don’t need it,”

“I don’t go crazy with that. I think the best thing a team can have is different leaders. We need it from all the players.

“Of course I am very thankful to the fans that feel I can be the captain or the leader of the club but I honestly don’t think that we should have only one. I feel I could be a leader in some moments but I don’t think I am the only leader at the club.”

De Gea and Pogba have also been fan favourites to be captained, particularly with the likelihood of Valencia leaving this summer continuously rising.

The full-back is no longer guaranteed a place in the starting XI and so it makes sense whoever is the manager after the summer should look to hand it to another player.

Herrera’s resurgent form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has seen supporters fall in love with him once more and so they’ve been making the case for him.
