Player ratings: Man United smash Arsenal, Solskjaer wins 8 in a row

Sergio Romero 7 – Made one crucial tip onto the bar 60 seconds into the first half. A tidy night’s work.

Ashley Young 5 – Did not perform well against Brighton and was once again off the pace here. Largely at fault for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal and picked up a silly booking in the second half.

Eric Bailly 6 – Played Aubameyang onside for Arsenal’s goal but, on the whole, positioned himself well in his first game since 2018.

Victor Lindelof 7 – Once again quietly very strong at the heart of defence, stepping into midfield with confidence and absorbing Arsenal’s pressure well.

Luke Shaw 6 – Kept things remarkably solid down his side, with Arsenal’s joy mainly coming against Young. Could have offered more going forward.

Nemanja Matic 7 – Executed his job brilliantly. Occasionally lost possession but his engine and balance at the base of midfield was crucial.

Ander Herrera 7 – A proper ‘mad dog’ performance from the Spaniard, who charged across the midfield with unyielding ferocity. His passing has improved tenfold under the new regime.

Paul Pogba 7 – Grew into the game. Could not find good positions to start with but as the game progressed, with Arsenal searching for an equaliser, his driving influence down the middle laid the platform for Manchester United’s third goal.

Alexis Sanchez 6 – What a moment for the Chilean, taking the ball round Petr Cech and scoring wonderfully against his former club. Could have had a more pronounced impact from out wide.

Jesse Lingard 7 – Man of the match. Spearheaded the rampant counter-attacking first half display which gave Man United a two goal lead, scoring a beautifully taken goal moments after Sanchez, and then battled like a true scrapper in the second. How can you not love him?

Romelu Lukaku 6 – A genuinely encouraging performance from the Belgian. Displayed good fight and supplied two wonderful assists in the first half. Lacked consistency in his decision making, though.
