France manager Didier Deschamps has urged Paul Pogba to step up and play to his full potential at the World Cup in Russia this summer.
Deschamps has already leapt to Pogba’s defence after the 25-year-old was jeered by fans for misplacing a number of passes during their 3-1 win against Italy on Friday.
Pogba is set to be a key player for France in the World Cup over the next month and Deschamps has given him his backing to rise on the big occasion.
Speaking to Telefoot, he said: “Not everything was successful, but he helped the team to be well organised. I don’t question Paul’s potential. If I called him up, it’s because he’s indispensable for me.
“I know what he is capable of. He has to raise his level of play. I have confidence in him, as I do in my other players.”
The dynamic centre-midfielder has endured a tricky couple of seasons at Old Trafford since returning in 2016 after four years at Juventus and is regularly criticised by supporters and pundits alike for inconsistent displays and attitude issues.
Pogba’s potential to be a world-class midfielder is clearly there though, but he might have to start playing like an £89m player sooner rather than later if Jose Mourinho’s faith is to be kept in him
