Manchester United have joined Real Madrid and Liverpool in the race to sign Porto right-back Eder Militao over the January transfer window, according to reports.
The club looked at several defensive over the summer but did not consider any of them to be viable targets – much to the anger of Jose Mourinho.
Any activity in January is unlikely for Man United, although their position would change if the right opportunity arises. Ole Gunnar Solskaer has intimated that he does not expect any further additions.
But according to the Mail‘s Adam Shergold, Eder’s impressive start to life at Porto – he joined in the summer from Sao Paulo – has attracted the attention of United, who are supposedly considering activating his £42.5m release clause.
According to the report, United could have signed the defender for just £3m in the summer, but Mourinho was not interested in the full-back.
Last week’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United demonstrated the marked lack of pace or design down the right hand side, with Juan Mata and Antonio Valencia only serving to frustrate supporters by slowing play down.
Alongside Diogo Dalot, perhaps Eder could serve as a step towards a new type of player on the right hand side of defence after several years of Valencia’s laboriousness.
