Olivier Giroud isn’t concerned following Chelsea’s signing of Gonzalo Higuain, with the Frenchman claiming the added competition can only be healthy for the club.
With Álvaro Morata misfiring this season, Maurizio Sarri was desperate to sign a new forward this month, eventually landing on formerly on-loan AC Milan striker Higuain.
Giroud meanwhile has started just six Premier League games this campaign, and with Morata likely to leave the club on loan before the window closes, the former Arsenal man will compete with Higuain for a starting berth.
The 31-year old Argentina international is expected to start against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Sunday, ahead of potentially earning himself a spot in the Premier League tie against Bournemouth on Wednesday.
However, instead of being worried by added competition, Giroud is relishing the chance to compete against the Blues’ new signing. Talking to ESPN, as quoted by Metro, Giroud said:
I think it’s good for the club to have different top strikers.
It’s a benefit for the team and competition is always good for strikers, so we will try to step up together to help the team reach our target.
