The one that got away? Perhaps that’s too much of a stretch but World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he spoke to former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about making the switch from Monaco the north London – prior to confirming a move to Paris St-Germain.
Kylian Mbappe is quoted in the Express saying that there was dialogue between himself and the French manager;
“We were in touch in 2017.”
“I’d chosen a different path, and he didn’t hold it against me. He was a gentleman and wished me good luck.”
Ultimately Arsenal lost out to Kylian Mbappe for a stunning £162 million transfer to the French capital, where he has since capture the imagination further scoring 35 and assisting an additional 22 in just 59 appearances for PSG.
The news that Arsene Wenger talked with Kylian Mbappe regarding a move to north London is certainly interesting and somewhat strange considering the obvious price-tag and the stringent budget the club were working with in the past seasons.
Yesterday Mbappe, still only 19, picked up the first ever Kopa Trophy (awarded to the best players under 21) and finished up in fourth on this year’s Ballon d’or list behind winner Luka Modric, Ronaldo and fellow World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann.
