Only Eric Bailly, Angel Gomes, Jesse Lingard and Diogo Dalot have publicly paid tribute to Jose Mourinho on social media after he was sacked by Manchester United.
Over 48 hours have elapsed since the 55-year-old, following the club’s worst start to a season in 28 years, was dismissed from his post at Old Trafford.
Former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as interim coach, with Mike Phelan returning to the club as an assistant.
Amid considerable change over the last few days, only three first team players – Bailly, Lingard and Dalot – have expressed their support for him on social media.
Bailly: “Whatever they may say, I will always be thankful to the person who gave me the chance to make my debut at Old Trafford. Thank you for what you have taught me. Good luck, coach.” #mufc [Ig] pic.twitter.com/9MAxOMglLU

Mourinho was an unpopular figure in the dressing room. That much has been clear for some time but, in the aftermath of his sacking, various details of his infectious gloominess have been reported: describing Paul Pogba as a corrosive on the team ahead of Southampton; telling his players ahead of playing Brighton and Hove Albion last season that he was sick of them letting him down; shouting ‘this is s**t’ down the phone over pre-season as signings failed to arrive.
There are many more. Take what you read with a pinch of salt, of course, but you see a consensus surrounding Mourinho emerging. In the end, such toxicity has to be removed. The players have a weight lifted off them; now they need to go out and perform.
