Manchester United fans have expressed a mixture of joy, relief and messages of respect following news that Jose Mourinho had been sacked on Tuesday morning.
The club announced at 9:46am that the 55-year-old had been dismissed with immediate effect after overseeing Man United’s worst ever start to a Premier League season.
Mourinho endeared himself to the club’s support by winning the Europa League and League Cup in his first season, but things have turned deeply toxic since the turn of the year.
Supporters have expressed primarily what can be described as relief, giving way to messages of gratitude for what Mourinho did at the club.
Jose Mourinho . Gone ! Three or four players should be getting their suit cases at the ready , because what’s been going on on the field is disgraceful. I’d have a mirror put in the dressing Room . #MUFC.

Ed Woodward.
Hands Jose Mourinho a new contract at the start of the year then doesn't listen to him regarding transfers in the summer. Sacks him at the end of the year with a £24m payout.
Get him out next, please.

Best day of following United this season.
Tells a sad kind of story, doesn’t it?— Matti (@stiuge) December 18, 2018
Absolutely the right decision, albeit months too late. Absolutely right to hold off on a replacement til the summer as well. Big leap of faith to assume they’ll sort the structure and get the right man but it couldn’t go on like this

You are the best football manager in the world. No one comes close.
You deserve better. I hope this event sends you on to even better opportunities.
Thank you for the memories and good luck! pic.twitter.com/VMVG0dS93m

Mourinho had to go. And you know why: terrible football, alienated players, no direction, poor results, an unusually leaky defence, and an overriding feeling of toxicity. If anything, this sacking – which nobody expected – has been enacted to put smiles back on faces.
But we should not ignore the positive side of Mourinho. The Portuguese completed the set of European trophies by winning the Europa League, won the League Cup, kept hold of David de Gea, exposed the board for their role in creating the club’s dire situation, and has left the next manager with a very good squad.
Thank you, Jose. Now is the right time to move on.
