Jose Mourinho was adamant after Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield that Jurgen Klopp’s side were fortunate to win the game.
The visitors were overwhelmed to begin with, falling behind to Sadio Mane’s goal, before Jesse Lingard capitalised on a mistake by keeper Alisson to equalise out of the blue.
Man United simply held on in the second half, showing little ambition to produce any attacks of their own, and eventually saw the game slip away from them through a pair deflected strikes from Xherdan Shaqiri.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho was determined to assert that Lingard’s goal was not fortunate, and that Liverpool winning was. I don’t know either.
Mourinho, “If you want to speak about fortunate then you speak about their second and third goal. Our goal was the result of a good action. Their keeper made what I call a half mistake.”

Mourinho, after failing to beat a team like West Ham United or Stoke City, often likes to speak of how only one team wanted to win. That notion very much applied at Liverpool.
Not for one second did United look like a team with an ambition to win the game. Under the Portuguese their remit in this classic fixture – one which means more than any to a United supporter – was to defend and hope for an opposition mistake.
And if you go to Anfield – or any game – as a United boss and play with that mindset, you deserve to lose. Every single time.
