Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola has hailed the development of Ruben Loftus-Cheek this season.
The England international has been playing a sporadic role in the Blues’ first-team, with boss Maurizio Sarri often utilising him in cup competitions.
After an impressive loan spell at Crystal Palace, the midfielder played a part in his national team’s World Cup run to the semi-finals during the summer.
However, he has still yet to secure a place in Chelsea’s starting line-up this term, with competition for places in the middle of the park fierce following the arrivals of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic prior to the new campaign.

Zola spoke to the media ahead of the Blues’ clash with Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening and discussed the progress of Loftus-Cheek.
As quoted by Football London, the Italian coach said:
Ruben has gone a long way from the beginning of the season. He has improved a lot, especially his application on the pitch. No one ever doubted his qualities. They are easy to see. But as a midfielder he’s learning duties he didn’t have before.
He had the duties, but maybe he didn’t have the application. That is improving at the moment. I’m very pleased with him.
He’s an impact player. I’m pleased for him because he’s worked hard. He was suffering when he didn’t play. To see him achieving something and being recognised, it must be very good for him.
The 22-year-old will be determined to impress if he is handed a chance in the starting line-up against the Cherries.
