David de Gea 6 – Assured as always. Despite early Bournemouth pressure, De Gea had little to do and was left vulnerable only due to the weaknesses of the defenders in front of him.
Ashley Young 6 – Challenged heavily by a young and exciting David Brooks. Defensive positioning was questionable, as it normally is, but the work rate and general solidity that Young brings is often unmatched in the United side.
Chris Smalling 5 – His 301st game for United and he’s still making the same mistakes as he was in his first game for the club. An average defender who is somehow Man United’s main man at the back. Criminal marking, or lack thereof, in the opening 20 minutes hat allowed Bournemouth to take the lead.
Victor Lindelof 6 – Also culpable for Bournemouth’s opening goal having had a run of good games. Helped United improve in the second half with his ability to play vertically through the lines.
Luke Shaw 7 – All of United’s attacking impetus came down Shaw’s left flank. Some very nice link-up play with Martial which saw him have a good chance one-on-one with Begovic.
Nemanja Matic 5 – Another nightmare first half from Matic who is in woeful form for United. Only a matter of time, or at least it should be, until he’s dropped.
Fred 5 – Some good defensive contributions as he helped to shield United’s defence but offered little in terms of incision in the United attack. His replacement, Herrera, made United look like a far-improved side.
Paul Pogba 6 – An average performance from Pogba turned into a good showing in the second half as he grew into the game. Always an important player for United simply due to the pace he plays the game at and the quality of his passing and hold-up play, but offered far less than he could have done until the final 20 minutes as his run and cross set up Rashford for the winner.
Juan Mata 6 – Another player who was average and deserved to be substituted by Mourinho in the second half. Some misplaced passes as he added little to the game.
Anthony Martial 7 – Now has five goals in his last five games and is by far and away United’s most threatening player. He is the danger man and is outperforming Sanchez, Lukaku and Rashford.
Alexis Sanchez 6 – Grabbed the assist for Martial’s goal and offered something that Lukaku doesn’t; making runs in behind the defence and drifting wide before cutting the ball back for his fellow attackers. Not an amazing performance, but his movement was important.
Substitutes
Marcus Rashford 6 – A missed chance from five yards could have overshadowed his other contributions but his composure to finish in the last minute was superb. Always a threat coming off the bench.
Ander Herrera 7 – Helped to change United’s fortunes in the second half. Came on for Fred and offered so much more in attack. Many have rightly called for him to have a place in the starting line-up ahead of the under-performing Matic.
Jesse Lingard 6 – Not on for enough time to make a significant impact but had a good chance to give United the three points after a lovely move from the Reds. Good to see him back after injury, though.
