David de Gea 6 – Some suggested he should saved Sergio Aguero’s eventual winner. It’s a harsh criticism. He handled a few nervy situations well, and perhaps he could have stopped Aguero from doubling Manchester City’s winner, but it was a fizzing drive from Aguero from close range.
Ashley Young 5 – City exploited the fact that Young is not only not a good right-back, but he’s not even a right-back. United’s opposition have spent huge money on their wide defenders since Guardiola arrived. United should take note.
Victor Lindelof 6 –
Chris Smalling 6 – Had Silva not scored for City early on, it’s possible the home side would have had a penalty courtesy of Smalling. No surprises there. Generally fine even though he was often torn apart in the opening stages, as were all of his teammates.
Luke Shaw 6 – Better than most of United’s teammates in terms of offering some attacking impetus on the left flank. No great partnership with Martial, who was quiet throughout.
Nemanja Matic 5 – Poor in an overall weak United midfield. Lingered on the ball too often. More composed that Herrera, though.
Ander Herrera 4 – Constantly guilty of misplacing possession in the first half. An unnecessary additional challenge for United in an already tough game. Offered nothing and made Paul Pogba’s absence all the more notable.
Marouane Fellaini 6 – Hugely important aerially and solid on the ball, too.
Jesse Lingard 5 – Recently returned from injury and was quiet until he was subbed.
Anthony Martial 6 – Scored from the penalty spot but was quiet and his touch was slightly heavy at times, meaning half-chances couldn’t be turned into proper opportunities for United.
Marcus Rashford 6 – Left frustrated and isolated frequently. Often seen urging his teammates forward, both on and off the ball.
Substitutes
Romelu Lukaku 5 – Won a penalty for United but mainly through City goalkeeper Ederson’s idiocy rather than his good work. Continually lost the ball which meant United couldn’t mount a counter-attack.
Juan Mata 6 – Offered some more composure in the United midfield. The hero in Turin couldn’t provide such late brilliance again, though.
Alexis Sanchez 6 – Not on the pitch for that long and worked hard but couldn’t change the game for Jose Mourinho’s side.
