Paul Scholes explains who Man United’s new game changer is

Ander Herrera was responsible for changing the game for Manchester United in the Reds’ 2-1 comeback victory against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime, according to Paul Scholes.

The former-Man United midfield man was pleased with the improvement of Jose Mourinho’s side after half-time.

Callum Wilson, one of the Premier League’s most prolific strikers in recent weeks, put the Cherries ahead at the Vitality Stadium and although Anthony Martial levelled for United before half-time, things weren’t good enough.

Marcus Rashford scored a 92nd-minute winner but Scholes attributed the change in United’s performance and effectiveness against Bournemouth to Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera.

“I think Herrera made a big difference to the team,” Scholes said after the game on BT Sport.

“He seemed to sure things up, steady the ship a little bit and that allowed Pogba to do what he’s good at.

“If Pogba’s in a midfield where he’s expected to be disciplined he doesn’t really like the responsibility of that. Fred, as well, I don’t think he does.

“So Herrera coming on had a big change on the game.”

Scholes is exactly right. Herrera has been a bit-part player for United over the last 18 months, but acted as an enabler on Saturday.

He shouldn’t suddenly be seen as United’s saviour or the solution to the problems at the club, but it’s vital that Jose Mourinho accepts that it might be time to shake things up in midfield.

Nemanja Matic has been woeful and Herrera’s showing at the weekend should be enough to convince Mourinho to change things. Herrera enabled his teammates to be better while Matic drags them back.

Mourinho recently dropped striker Romelu Lukaku. Matic could follow.
