Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Romelu Lukaku has a chance of recovering in time for the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon.
The Belgian, who has not scored since September, picked up an injury ahead of Manchester United’s victory at AFC Bournemouth and missed out on the trip to Juventus.
Both Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez have impressed in the No.9 role in his absence, with the former scoring a last minute winner against Eddie Howe’s side last weekend.
Speaking ahead of the derby, Mourinho revealed Lukaku would train with the squad on Friday ahead of being assessed by the club’s medical staff.
“Yeah, Lukaku is training with the team this morning,” he said. “If the answer is positive and we have of course one more session tomorrow, if the answer is positive he’s ready but in this moment I can only say he trains with the team, I don’t know his answer.”
Mourinho added to MUTV: “No new injuries. So from Juventus we don’t bring important injuries. We have touches but I don’t think any player that was available for Juventus will be out. We have a chance – it is Friday morning now – that Lukaku could be back.”
Even if Lukaku was 100 per cent fit, the idea of him starting a game like this makes no sense at all. He has not started since that disappointing showing at home to Juventus and his confidence is in the gutter.
Meanwhile, Mourinho is starting to receive some joy seeking alternative options. Sanchez and Rashford have both looked dangerous at times. He will not want to put an end to that this weekend.
