Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson inadvertently helped Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to avoid a charge from the Football Association.
The Portuguese coach was expected to receive a major fine and an almost certain touchline ban after swearing in his native tongue into a camera after Man United’s 3-2 comeback victory against Newcastle United.
Mourinho looked at the camera and allegedly said ‘fodas filhos de puta’ which is Portuguese for ‘f*** off sons of a b****’. It was widely accepted that the United boss would be punished, but the Reds decided to fight the case with great force and Mourinho avoided any punishment.
That decision may be appealed by the FA, but The Times reveals that United based their defence on the actions and non-charge of Liverpool midfielder Henderson.
While in action for England against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League, Henderson supposedly swore at Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic as he shouted “are you the f***ing ref?”.
Henderson did not receive a punishment from the referee on the day or from UEFA and United used this example in their case against the FA, as per The Times.
It was an important case to fight as a touchline ban for Mourinho would have likely included next weekend’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.
