Ex-Arsenal man Kevin Campbell has praised head coach Unai Emery for playing ‘mind games’ on Mesut Ozil (via The Mirror).
He’s often been the subject of debate and that was no different for Mesut Ozil when he was dropped on Sunday afternoon.
The German playmaker didn’t play a minute of Arsenal’s 2-1 away win against AFC Bournemouth.
It’s the sort of match which the German hasn’t played particularly well in historically and now, former Arsenal man Kevin Campbell has praised Unai Emery’s handling of the situation.
“I think it’s smart management [to drop Ozil],” Campbell told Love Radio.
“We know that sometimes when it gets really physical, people accuse Mesut Ozil of not even turning up for the game.
“It’s away, it was going to be tough so he’s used his squad the best he can, he changed the system and Mesut Ozil is there on the bench if he needs him. This manager isn’t afraid to make tough decisions.”
It was a bold decision but Campbell has backed Ozil to show up against Tottenham next weekend.
“The challenge is down right there for Mesut Ozil. I think he’ll definitely play [in the north London derby]. He’s a big-game player.
“Sometimes the mindset is more difficult against the smaller teams because playing against the big teams, that’s the one you’re motivated for.
“I think there’s a bit of mind games going on with the manager and I think he’s challenged Mesut Ozil, and I think Ozil will show up.”
It was a big decision but it’s difficult to say whether it was the correct one. The Gunners picked up the win but Ozil’s replacement Henrikh Mkhitaryan was the worst Arsenal player on the day. Let’s hope Ozil can run the show on Sunday.
