Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has revealed why he decided to take off Alex Iwobi at halftime of the 1-1 draw with Wolves (via Arsenal.com).
He was one of the best-performing players in the first half so it was a surprise to see Alex Iwobi replaced at the break.
The Nigerian international was one of the few creative outlets from a disappointing half but was replaced for Matteo Guendouzi at the break. Now, Unai Emery has explained why.
“It was a tactical change,” Emery explained.
“We wanted to play our right and left backs deeper and win back more possession inside with Sead and Hector.
“Sometimes we did this situation well and we created chances to score. Their work was good defensively because their block was very high.”
It was a rather strange decision from Unai Emery. Alex Iwobi was performing well and the Gunners missed his ability on the ball in the second half. Matteo Guendouzi upped the tempo in midfield after the break but perhaps substituting Granit Xhaka or Lucas Torreira would have been the better option to be replaced.
