Manchester United star Ander Herrera has admitted the players sometimes need to feel as though everything is lost before reacting.
The Spaniard was instrumental in his side’s comeback win over Bournemouth on Saturday despite only coming off the bench in the final third of the match.
United’s stars have been criticised for seemingly needing to trail before stepping up and the evidence for that is certainly there.
Along with Bournemouth, Jose Mourinho’s men had to secure a comeback win against Newcastle before trying to turn things around against Chelsea in the 2-2 draw.
The Portuguese manager himself conceded he was left baffled by the poor start on Saturday as his players were fired up during the pre-match warm-up.
According to the club’s official website, Ander said: “It’s like I was saying in some interview before. Sometimes we have to see that everything is lost to react.
“And with the players we have, we can react. We can win games as we did against Newcastle or today.
“But one day hopefully we can go to the second half winning 3-0 and enjoy the game. Of course, we enjoyed this game because we won in the last minute but it’s not healthy for our fans, for our fans’ hearts!”
Perhaps Mourinho could do with playing Herrera from the start of clashes as his tenacity could be infectious on the rest of the team.
It’s actually a little unusual the players aren’t using their current position in the table as a motivator to start matches with more enthusiasm.
In a season where Jose was expected to capitalise on a second placed finish to put in a title challenge, United have fallen behind expectations.
Of course now no one expects them to win the league but missing out on the top four spots is a real possibility if they don’t fix their current issues.
