Sweden captain Andreas Granqvist has confirmed there is a “kernel of truth” in reports linking him with a move to Manchester United and indicated he would be open to a move.
The 33-year-old impressed at the World Cup for Sweden alongside Victor Lindelof, scoring twice and leading his team to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994.
Reports have claimed that Jose Mourinho, amid Man United’s shabby defensive start to the season, had pinpointed Granqvist as a potential short-term option in the January transfer window.
And the Sweden captain, who plays for Helsingborgs, noted that these reports were in fact true and added he would be open to a move to Old Trafford if United were to make a concrete offer.
“There is indeed interest… This time there is a kernel of truth (to the transfer rumours),” he said.
“I am honoured that I am linked to such a large club, and if there is a concrete offer in January, then both the club and I will accept that, but that is currently not the case.”
Mourinho wanted a central defender over the summer and Ed Woodward essentially said no. Since then United have conceded 14 goals in eight Premier League games and the manager, by playing Scott McTominay at centre back in consecutive games, has not been afraid to highlight why this was a mistake.
He has lost confidence in Eric Bailly, while Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo have resumed their normal places on the injury table.
Bringing in Grandqvist, therefore, would be a cheap way to restore some calm at the back in January. Mourinho needs players he can rely on and the Sweden captain, whose arrival would please Lindelof, is a smart option in that respect.
