Jose Mourinho could lose his job if he loses to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Manchester United have not won a home game since the opening day of the season and are now four games without a win in all competitions.
Failure to beat a winless Newcastle side with just one away goal all season would surely prompt the Old Trafford hierarchy into seriously considering his position.
With that in mind, here are three players Mourinho needs to start against Rafa Benitez’s side.
The 20-year-old was one of the few Man United players who displayed a genuine fearless appetite against either West Ham United and Valencia.
He has sought to inject a level of energy desperately missing from this Mourinho side in similar fashion to how he kickstarted Louis van Gaal‘s depleted attack in 2016. And with Romelu Lukaku offering precious little up front in recent times, Mourinho would be smart to give Rashford a chance to bring more movement to United’s play in the No.9 role.
Fred
Mourinho has for some reason decided against starting Fred in the last three games despite a promising performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Valencia’s midfield skipped around Marouane Fellaini and Nemanja Matic on Tuesday. They looked like beanpoles at times, failing to create incision or forward momentum, which is what this tactically dysfunctional United team needs. Fred was signed over the summer to bring exactly that.
Diogo Dalot
Once again, Dalot’s recent exclusions from games against Wolves, West Ham and Valencia have left supporters baffled. He was sensational against Young Boys and provided an excellent cross for Fellaini’s goal against Derby, bringing some much needed vitality to United’s play out wide.
Mourinho, at a time like this, needs fresh, enthusiastic players desperate to prove themselves. Dalot’s selection is therefore a no-brainer.
