Pundit Alan Shearer has revealed just why Manchester United have struggled defensively so far this season, claiming Jose Mourinho’s comments have stripped his backline of any confidence.
The Portuguese manager had publicly revealed his desire to sign a centre-back with multiple names chased during the summer.
The likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng were all said to be targets but instead Mourinho was left empty handed.
Shearer believes United’s struggles at the back this campaign is due to the former Real Madrid man’s strong statements on his defenders.
Jose has also insisted multiple times that his backline don’t have the technical ability to play out of the back.
According to Manchester Evening News, Alan said to Match of the Day: “He has bought two (centre-halfs), but let’s not also forget that this team defensively conceded one more goal than Man City last season and they’re all over the place this year because they’re constantly hearing their manager telling them they’re not good enough and that has to affect their confidence.”
There’s definitely truth to Mourinho’s statements in terms of how poor his defence is but it certainly doesn’t breed confidence in the current players.
It especially doesn’t help the likes of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof who he invested in personally.
Fans certainly expect more out of those pair than any one of the other defenders but Jose’s outspoken comments have backfired on him.
Supporters already recognise there’s a need for more investment in that department as well as the lack of ball-playing ability so he doesn’t necessarily have to put it all out there.
